Poverty and Children in America - Free Essay Example
Poverty and Children in the United States Who are Americaââ¬â¢s poor children? How many children in America are poor? What are some of the hardships that face poor children in America? These are only a few questions that we can ask ourselves when considering children who live in poverty in America. Children face monumental hardships in our country because of poverty or the condition of not possessing the means to afford basic human needs. The economic crisis that we find ourselves in today threatens to cause a dramatic increase in the number of Americaââ¬â¢s poor children; however poverty in America has long been a crisis that has faced the children of our nation. This essay will investigate the previous asked questions and research the challenges that poverty plays on the sociology of children in the United States. Who are Americaââ¬â¢s Poor Children? According to the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) 14 million American children live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level, which is $22,050 a year for a family of four. They also state that the number of children living in poverty increased by 21 % between 2000 and 2008 and it is estimated that there are 2. 5 million more children living in poverty today than in 2000. (Wright, 2010) These numbers are staggering and are estimated to grow significantly in the next few years considering the current economic crisis facing the United States. The NCCP explains that current research shows, on average, families need an income of about twice the federal poverty level to survive. Children who live in homes with incomes of $44,100 or less, for a family of four, are considered low income. This means that forty one percent of children in the United States live in low income homes. Children represent 25 % of the population and 41 % of all children live in low income families and nearly one in every five live in poor families (NCCP, 2010). Families in the United States are facing challenging economic times where workers are seeing decline in wages and the loss of jobs. Many cannot afford basic human needs with increased costs on food, gas, and of homes; these economic realities have a profound sociological effect on Americaââ¬â¢s children. The NCCP goes on to state that some of the characteristics of children who live in poverty in the United States are race and ethnicity related. They note that 11 % of white children live in poor families, 35 % of black children live in poor families, and 31% of Hispanic children live in poor families. These figures show that black and Hispanic children are disproportionately poor in the United States. Also children who live in single parented homes are more likely to live below the poverty line especially those who live with single mothers. ââ¬Å"Female headed households live in poverty more than all other household typesâ⬠(Poverty, 2001). Single mothers have been labeled the ââ¬Å"new poorâ⬠most often because of changes in family composition such as divorce, separation, and remarriage, driven by a series of events in their lives. Who are Americaââ¬â¢s children living in poverty? They are the kids who live in the confines of these statistics generated by levels of income and they are often children which we see every day. Unlike the torturous pictures we see of poverty stricken children who live in underdeveloped countries, the children of the United States who live in poverty are struggling to survive in a society where poverty goes very often unnoticed. Hardships Facing Children who live in Poverty Hunger In the article ââ¬Å"In America Today, hunger is very realâ⬠; Yolanda Young quoted President Obama saying ââ¬Å"Hunger rose significantly last year. â⬠Mr. Obama said that he hopes to alleviate childhood hunger by 2015. (Young, 2009) What does that mean then for the children who are going hungry today? These children eat less healthy meals, they visit shelters, they get help from school food programs, and they eat at emergency kitchens. The U. S. Census Bureau states that nearly 14 % of all American homes were afraid they might not be able to put enough food on the table this past year. Fortunately there are programs that assist families in crisis and can help to feed the children of the United States; however the number of hungry children is growing. Child hunger in the United States has been described as an increasingly complex problem and has been called the ââ¬Å"silent epidemic. â⬠(Goldstein, 2009) Malnutrition is being reported by medical professionals everywhere and is of major concern in almost every state in the nation. Children who suffer the effects of malnutrition contribute to a high number of those with negative health problems. Obesity is being associated as a side effect of malnutrition, as children ho donââ¬â¢t get enough to eat regularly eat foods that are less healthy. Childhood hunger also contributes to health conditions like a deteriorated immune system, chronic fatigue, developmental problems, and behavioral issues. Many poor children in the United States today, experience an uneasy or painful sensation caused by lack of food, or hun ger. Homelessness ââ¬Å"The National Center on Family Homelessness currently estimates that as many as fifty U. S. children (1. 5 million) are homeless or ââ¬Å"precariously housedâ⬠in temporary quarters such as motels and sheltersâ⬠(Cohen, 2009). Todayââ¬â¢s economic crisis is not helping this growing number of families that are being relocated as home foreclosures and loss of jobs add to the overwhelming number of homeless children in the United States. The result of homelessness can cause children to feel disassociated with those around them, they feel a sense of loss and privacy, and they ultimately feel an overwhelming sense of insecurity. Although these temporary quarters put a roof over the heads of millions of children in the United States, children often are left with psychological issues that last a lifetime. It is reported that homeless children are sick more often, go hungry more often, and repeat more than one grade in school over kids who have a home. Also, children who are homeless are more apt to have been exposed to sexual or physical abuse. The government has instituted many programs to help with the homelessness crisis in the United States; however for a child who has no home to call his own, this is little consolation. Inadequate Healthcare More often than not, children who live in poverty do not have adequate health care and comes as a result of a parent losing a job. We have discussed in this essay how the current economic crisis has affected families. With so many people losing jobs comes those same people who are losing the option of healthcare for their families. Government programs exist in order to provide healthcare for those who cannot afford it; however many argue if it is adequate. Preventative health care is essential for healthy living and the lack of this care affects children their whole lives. The NCCP reports that 17% of poor children lack health insurance, whereas 10% of all children (poor and non-poor) lack health insurance. In the ten most populated states, the percentage of poor children who lack insurance options ranges from nine percent in the state of Michigan to 31% in Florida, showing that state to state healthcare options are significantly different. The Childrenââ¬â¢s Health Insurance Reauthorization Program (CHIRP) was instituted in 2009 and is intended to give additional Medicaid benefits to children of low income families. Without programs like this, and others many children who live in poverty would have no insurance coverage at all. Many low income families lose insurance coverage every day because of job layoffs or employers who can no longer afford to offer insurance to their workers. Along with the health issues that come from living in poverty, inadequate health care coverage threatens the youth of our society. Education Children of poverty are more likely to fail in school achievement and are twice as likely to have repeated a grade, been suspended, or dropped out of high school. The effect of poverty on children as it relates to education clearly demonstrates the possibility of poor outcomes. Children who are hungry are less likely to learn, children who are homeless are far less likely to adapt socially to a classroom setting, and children who consistently miss school because of illness will be unable to pass the tests of authorized curriculum. Children who live in poverty are more likely to have learning disability and are more likely to fall prey to gangs and crime. Children of poverty are also more likely to be exposed to lower quality schools as neighborhood conditions often determine the quality of schools. Many poor children are at a disadvantage when it comes to education and struggle their entire lives because of this problem. Poverty contributes to low self esteem and causes a lack of confidence in children leading to lifelong deficiencies that threaten their economic futures. ââ¬Å"Poorer health and social behavior due to poverty undermine education achievementâ⬠(Moore, 2009). Researchers also suggest that chronic stress due to poverty undermines childrenââ¬â¢s working memory. It is evident that childhood poverty compromises educational prospects of children. Conclusion Child poverty is a significant and growing social problem as poverty negatively affects childrenââ¬â¢s development, health, home life, and educational goals. Children, who face these monumental hardships in our country because of poverty or the condition of not having basic human needs, are rapidly growing in numbers. The sociological implications of children living in poverty in the United States threaten the very social structure of our country. The stability pattern of social behavior in the United States can be uprooted by the problems associated with children who live in poverty. If we truly believe that the children are our future, then we must address the issues that low income children are faced with and we need to more than hope that childhood poverty will be alleviated by 2015, as efforts to reduce the child poverty rate commands the nationââ¬â¢s attention today. This crisis in which children in the United States live in poverty, demands efforts to reduce the child poverty rate, and command the nationââ¬â¢s attention today. Ergonomics Investigations at the Workplace-Free-Samples for Students
Question: Discuss about the possible solution of anticipated Ergonomic problems when creating a good working environment for adaptations of Persons With Disabilities (PWD) into your workplace. Answer: Introduction People with disabilities experience many challenges such as they are excluded from normal work processes prevailing in the organization, problems in moving from one place to another, dependency on others, feeling of insecurity and many other. These challenges also occur if the environment of the organization is not proper(Schur, Kruse Blanck 2013). For instance- people with physical disabilities also have the risk of falls if the floors are not properly wiped. Another instance is PDW also has risks due to lack of support and assistance from other workers. Unavailability of support tools such as wheelchairs and walker can also affect disable people at the workplace. This can also hamper their work activities. Around 57 million people in America had the issues of physical disabilities and this ratio is also expected to grow due to negative health trends. People still work with such disabilities and they merely consider it as a limit that restricts different life activities(de la Vega et al. 2016). Therefore, in America, nearly 19% of the total population suffers with disabilities. In the year 2016, 12.6% people had physical disabilities. Disability prevalence is also higher in minority groups such as American Indians, blacks and Alaska Natives. However, on the other hand, there are more than 650 million persons with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific. Physical disabilities typically causes because of brain injury, any serious illness and genetic disorders. People with physical disabilities have the major symptoms like rigidity of the limbs, abnormal posture, involuntary movements and unsteadiness of walking(Carreon et al. 2016). People with disabilities not only experience physical risk but they also have risk related to working in the workplace(Rimmer et al. 2014). Thus, among different physical disabilities, present study has been emphasizing on spinal cord injury. SCI is termed as damage to the spinal cord that brings transformations in the functioning of the body. Such changes arise in the form of loss of muscle function, develops sensation in the body and most often it leads to automatic functioning on the body parts. Further, in the study discussion has also been made regarding ergonomics investigations at the workplace(Gips, Zhang Anderson 2015). Person with disabilities have many risks and challenges while working at the workplace; hence all such challenges have been mentioned in the research work. Alongside, information about different tools for PWD is also discussed with its impact on the anticipated challenges. Lastly, in the study improvement plan is being made that can depict benefits for PWD. Findings In a construction business, there is a person who has spinal cord injury (physical disability) and who has half waist downwards paralysis(Schur, Kruse Blanck 2013). The person has been put to a wheelchair to help him in moving to different places on the site. This section is based on investigating the workplace where PWD is carrying out all his duties and tasks. As per the above image, it is clear that supporting tools are available at the workplace; hence the person will not be having any problem. Supporting tools play a crucial role for PWD as that helps the person to move to different places without any dependence on others. Apparently, the construction site is an open place; hence only a few amenities are available(Rimmer et al. 2014). Though the person has wheelchair; but long-term sitting is not suitable for him; hence vanity van is also made available for that person. Proper medical services are also available at the workplace; hence in the case of emergency PWD can avail such amenities. However, PWD has several risks due to construction materials which can also lead to the risk of falls. While investigating the workplace, it is being ascertained that person with a disability can conduct all his activities in a team work as many people are available for his support. At the same time, the person can also handle manual processes merely by sitting at the construction site (Rimmer, Lai, Young 2016). He can also manage paper work while sitting on the site and alongside, he can handle the process of controlling and monitoring. Since the person has spinal cord injury; therefore too much pressure on the brain should not be given as that might hamper the existing capability of work. There are many people who can directly support PDW; hence the person will be able to manage his work and tasks efficiently. Tools like Limb Support can be used for PWD wherein the person needs to keep the upper arms parallel to the spine and elbow at 90 degrees. However, the hands need to be resting on the table as that can aid in minimize the level of strain. Further, feet must also be at resting position on the floor, and it should be suitably aligned with the lower leg. In this respect, the right chair should be placed for the person so that lumbar support can be attained. At the same time, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment is useful in managing suitable body movements so that PWD can manage all its work activities in an appropriate manner(Simplican et al. 2015). Thus, in the present case, RULA tool can be adopted as it is based on observation which helps in assessing postural risks. It can also be used to ascertain the risk factors that can impact the overall health of the patient. RULA seems to be a valuable tool assessment tool which needs to be applied in specific ways especially when it is recommended by the experts and specialists; however the results are not absolute; still, it can be used in the current workplace. Another ergonomic assessment tool seems to utilize a systematic process which helps in evaluating whole body postural (Rimmer, 2015). At the same time, it also aids in analyzing risks associated with work activities and tasks. The tool is useful regarding assigning ranks and scores to the body regions and then afterward it is compiled with risk factors variables. The subsequent tool is also useful for PWD as through this daily work activities can be managed suitably. However, it will decrease the dependency of a person on others; therefore it can help in building the morale of the person. Therefore, it is clear that PWD will be having many difficulties while managing work at the construction site; however, on the other side, dependency on such tools can assist the person to regulate all the activities appropriately. With the help of such tools, PWD might be facing fewer issues and difficulties; hence this can enhance work efficiency and performance aspects(Mithen et al. 2015). The above-mentioned tools are useful in making a person efficient in handling all the activities at the construction site. REBA and RULA both will aid PWD in giving pressure to the body regions; hence this will manage the movement of body parts. Discussion Of Solutions And Anticipated Challenges As discussed in the above section, it is clear that there should be optimum solutions for a person with a disability so that he can manage all his tasks and responsibilities in a suitable manner. Thus, according to the challenges it is vital to adopt specific solutions for PWD. Normally, PWD is excluded from the normal work; hence it is essential for the workplace and other employees to include and engage them in all the processes(Hammel et al. 2015). They need to be given suitable rights in decision-making process along with normal employees. Movement problems affect PWD highly, and they also restrict physical movement of a person. Thus, as per the problem, it is crucial for the employees to provide necessary support services to the patients. This could be performed in the form of arranging wheelchairs and other essential tools. Proper arrangement of support systems can aid the person with a disability to reduce the dependency on others which can also enhance the motivation of the person. Automatic systems can be arranged and provided to PWD at the construction site so that disabled people can manage their work activities by themselves. However, they need to ensure that proper attention and care is being given to safety and security prospects(Travers, Tincani Lang 2014). It is also vital for the construction company to execute health and safety measures so that chances of accidents and uncertainties can be avoided. This requires implementation of legal acts and rules; hence this can also protect PWD from accidents. There should be proper amenities like a clean floor, security services, proper handling of machines and adequate transportation services. PWD are dependent on others; hence to reduce their dependency, it is vital for the workplace to render all the services to the person. PWD must be provided training so that the person can manage all the tasks and activity by himself. PWD person feels more discouraged when he feels dependent on others; therefore there should be an appropriate delegation of authorities among people(Mir et al. 2017). Apparently, PWD feels more insecure while working with normal people as they seem to be more competent in managing all the tasks and activities. Job insecurity is one of the basic threats that come under the mindset of disabled people; therefore workplace must give suitable confirmation about the job security. This will assist the person to manage the life in a balanced way. The below table will depict how these solutions will minimize challenges of PWD(Lai et al. 2017). List of challenges Person with disability Normal person Dependency issue Disabled person need support from someone to manage the work activities. Normal people do not need to be dependent on others since they can manage their work by themselves. Safety and security issue Safety and security services are required to be implemented chiefly for disabled people. Normal person needs to focus on safety and security acts so that accidents can be avoided. Arrangement of support services For disabled people, support services are essential to be developed so that they can manage movement from one place to another. Normal people should assist the workplace in arranging support services for disabled people. Conclusion By above solutions, the most effective one would be a reduction in dependency of a person with disabilities. Apparently, a person gets affected because of dependency on others; hence proper training and development opportunities should be provided to PWD. With the help of training, a disabled person will be able to learn the techniques through which work can be managed through self-efforts(Magasi et al. 2015). Thus, while implementing the solution, the suitable plan needs to be developed so that all the activities can be adequately handled. In the long run, training session should be organized on a regular basis as that could assist a disabled person to learn diverse techniques. Along with training and development, it is also vital for the employees to provide morale support to a disabled person. Further, PWD should also be provided training in the form of use of different assessment tools. Knowledge about such thing will assist them in improving their own life. This is beneficial regarding handling all the roles and responsibilities by the person without the support of others(Mackelprang Salsgiver 2016). However, the appropriate review is vital in this domain to make necessary changes in the plan. There should be suitable schedule so that all the activities can be managed accordingly(Zyskowski et al. 2015). Moreover, it is also useful to organize training events timely so that development can be facilitated for PWD. Since the plan is implemented for the long run; therefore appropriate measures should be taken systematically which can help PWD in managing the livelihood. Hence, after reviewing the plan, suitable modifications can be made for developing the value of support services for PWD.
